Herseth Sandlin Avoids Honest Debate On Health Care Reform
PIERRE - As reported by Bob Ellis with DakotaVoice.com, Congresswoman
Herseth Sandlin has changed her tune on a public attendance invitation to
“An Update from Capitol Hill.” The event, hosted by the Rapid City Area
Chamber of Commerce’s Young Professionals Group Political Awareness
Subcommittee, initially was open to the public provided they paid a $20 fee.
A series of health care forums and town halls have popped up across the
country and the Democrats do not like what they are hearing. Concerned
citizens are standing up and having their voices heard and fighting the
Government takeover of health care in this country. And how do the Democrats
respond? On Monday, USA Today published an opinion piece from Nancy Pelosi,
leader of the House Democrats: “.it is now evident that an ugly campaign is
underway not merely to misrepresent the health insurance reform legislation,
but to disrupt public meetings and prevent members of Congress and
constituents from conducting a civil dialogue. These disruptions are
occurring because opponents are afraid not just of differing views-but of
the facts themselves. Drowning out opposing views is simply
un-American.”(’Un-American’ attacks can’t derail health care debate. By
Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer. USA Today, 8/10/09.)
It is the unpopularity of the Democrats’ plan and members of Congress like
Nancy Pelosi that has prevented Herseth Sandlin from scheduling a single
appearance to discuss health care during the month-long recess. Herseth
Sandlin does not wish to appear in a forum where she may be confronted with
constituents who do not want to hand over health care to the government.
“Herseth Sandlin is hiding from her constituents because she knows what type
of reaction she would receive at a health care forum in South Dakota,” said
SDGOP Executive Director Lucas Lentsch. “South Dakotans do not want
Washington bureaucrats determining who their doctors are and what medical
procedures they can receive. South Dakotans should call Congresswoman
Herseth Sandlin and encourage her to attend a public forum to listen to the
concerns of her constituents.”

One thought struck me this afternoon as I contemplated the flap over Herseth avoiding any open forums where *gasp* the unwashed masses public might be able to ask questions.
Tim Johnson failed to debate his opponent this past election. And we allowed it to happen. Now, Herseth Sandlin is fleeing events where she might be forced to dialogue with her constituents.
